Edwin Watkiss married 23 November 1862 to MARY STANLEY at St George's in the East, St Mary [Stepney]
Mary Stanley's father, like Edwin, was a smith. A son, Frederick Edward, was baptised Dec 4 1864 in same church [Frederick Edward Stanley "Whatkiss [sic], Stepney, Oct, Nov, Dec 1864, 1c, 4570 -- died 1870 (age at death 5, Whitechapel Jan-Feb-Mar, 1c 294). According to 1861 census, Mary born in Manchester 1839, so it looks as if she is the one who died aged 27 in 1866 (Poplar, 1c, 519, Apr, May, June). I don't know who looked after Frederick Edward after she died. Possibly the next wife for a while...

Edwin Watkiss married 17 November 1867 to JANE CADNEY at St Michael and all Angels, South Hackney. Jane's father is a merchant's clerk. Edwin now describes himself and his father as "engineer". A son, Edwin George, [Hackney, Jan-Feb-Mar 1870, 1b, 522) baptised 13 March 1870 at same church but dies later the same year (Hackney Jul-Aug-Sep, 1b, 328). According to 1851 census, Jane was born 1832-33 in London (1871 census: Bloomsbury). In 1871 census Jane and Edwin living in Thomas Street, Lambeth, so "Jane Watkish" (mistranscribed?) aged 41 died 1872 is probably her (Lambeth, Jul-Aug-Sep, Lambeth, 1d, 191)

Interesting to note that Edwin and Julia's first-born, also Edwin George, see below, was born Apr-May-Jun 1873, so conceived Jul-Aug-Sep 1872, possibly before Jane died.

1861 census: (Slightly speculative, because Edwin is listed as Edward. But I am convinced that this is a misapprehension on the part of the census enumerator – there is no indication of any Edward Watkiss of this age in London in 1851, 1871, 1881; age is about right -- 26 -- since census April 2 and Edwin prob born in June 1834; birthplace is right (Old Park = northeast Dawley; occupation is smith; and he is well placed geographicallly to have met Mary Stanley, his first wife) whom he married in 1862.
